Project Director

Sylvia K. Miller has nearly three decades of experience in scholarly publishing.  Specializing in acquiring and developing encyclopedias, she was involved in some of the earliest digital reference publishing at Scribners in the 1990s and went on to spearhead online reference as a publishing director at Routledge.

Following her move to Chapel Hill, NC in 2005, she brought the ten-volume Encyclopedia of World Dress & Fashion to Berg Publishers (Oxford, UK) and Oxford University Press, which they co-published and which in 2011 become the tenth Dartmouth Medal winner on her project list.  Since 2008, she has directed the Mellon-funded collaboration “Publishing the Long Civil Rights Movement” at UNC Chapel Hill, which has explored new ways to connect published scholarship with multimedia primary sources, both online and within enhanced e-books.  She holds a B.A. (U.C. Berkeley) and an M.A. (Columbia University) in comparative literature.
